House urges De Lima to appear in probe over Bilibid drug issue

(Eagle News) — Leaders of the House of Representatives on Monday urged Senator Leila De Lima to voluntarily show up in the congressional investigation over the presence of drugs inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) during her term as secretary of Department of Justice.

“I would ask her as a resource speaker, not as a senator because that is beyond the role she has right now. What we want to find out is what happened…but this is voluntary on her part,” AAMBIS-OWA party-list Rep. Sharon Garin, also a deputy speaker, said.

The authors of the resolution led by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez are interested in knowing the involvement of authorities who supervise the national penitentiary, counting De Lima and other heads of law enforcement agencies tasked to administer anti-drug measures.

It is evident that the dominance of drug syndicates was present inside the penitentiary when a raid was conducted by De Lima and operatives from National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in 2014. Make-do shabu laboratories, illegal drugs, firearms, money, jewelry and gadgets are just few of confiscated contrabands located inside the luxurious kubols of detained drug lords.

Even De Lima’s driver-slash-bodyguard would be keenly invited by the panel.

“For the sake of transparency and accountability, then we will invite all those who are suspected of being involved in such illegal drug trade; so if it involves the driver and the bodyguard, then Congress must send an invitation for him to air his side on the matter,” said Davao City Rep. Karlo Nograles.
Duterte alleged that the driver was the “bagman” of drug lords and syndicates inside the NBP and De Lima.

De Lima denied the allegation linking her to the illegal drug trade.
