House justice panel finds probable cause to impeach Sereno as Chief Justice

(Eagle News) — The House justice panel on Thursday found probable cause to impeach Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Voting 38-2, Rep. Reynaldo Umali, committee chair, also slated the next hearing to March 14, at 9:30 a.m.

During that hearing, the panel is slated to tackle the committee report and the Articles of Impeachment that will be presented to the plenary, Umali said.

If the report gets one-third votes of the entire House, the chamber will then transmit the impeachment complaint to the Senate, which will convene as an impeachment court.

The Office of the Solicitor General has also filed a quo warranto petition against Sereno, who has been on indefinite leave since last week.

The petition seeks to have her appointment as Chief Justice nullified.
