SC denies motion questioning imposition of martial law in Mindanao

(Eagle News) — The Supreme Court has denied a motion questioning President Rodrigo Duterte’s imposition of martial law in Mindanao.

Voting 10-3-1, the en banc denied for “mootness and lack of merit” the motion aimed at questioning a July 4 court decision upholding such.

Only Justice Marvic Leonen voted for the motion for reconsideration filed by Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, Eufemia Campos and Norkaya Mohamad.

Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio and Associate Justice Alfredo Caguioa voted to grant the motion partially.

President Duterte declared martial law in the southern part of the country after local terrorists overran Marawi in May.

Months later, Duterte declared the city free from the clutches of terrorists following the deaths of local terrorist leaders Omar Maute and Isnilon Hapilon. Based on a report from Erwin Temperante, Eagle News Service
