Justice Secretary Guevarra suspends 3 prosecutors over release of suspects in smuggling of P3 million worth of jewelry at NAIA

(Eagle News)–Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has ordered the suspension of three Pasay prosecutors for the release of suspects in the alleged smuggling of P3 million worth of jewelry at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Apart from the 60-day suspension, charges for gross neglect of duty, gross incompetence and inefficiency could be filed against Pasay Prosecutors Office officer in charge  Benjamin Lanto, Inquest Prosecutor Clementine Villanueva, and Assistant Prosecutor Florencio dela Cruz.

Deputy city prosecutor Dolores Pulgo-Rillera was designated officer in charge of the Office of the City Prosecutor of Pasay City.

On May 6, NAIA Customs operations officer Lomonto Macabando and spouses Abraham and Bang-sa Mimbalawang were released after inquest proceedings despite them having possession of the evidence against them, the P3 million worth of jewelry.

Villanueva, Dela Cruz and Lanto were on the list of names President Rodrigo Duterte ordered suspended for corruption.
