QUEZON City, Philippines (February 1) – “We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender”- Winston Churchill
This is the fighting spirit of the Filipino youth who courageously volunteered and have not been hindered even if all the odds are against them. They sailed to the disputed territories of West Philippine Sea – an act of protest against China’s reclamation activities. They have shown China that all Filipinos – even the youth – are unified and will never give up on defending Philippine sovereignty no matter how powerful their country is.
What they did was a wise decision for it showed China that Filipinos will never give up. The group “Kalayaan, Atin Ito” expressed their hope that they will not only get the world’s attention but also spark the Filipino spirit to unite in defense of our sovereignty. The volunteers added that they will continue to push for their advocacy until a resolution from the Philippines’ arbitration case in the international tribunal is reached. Also, the movement’s student coordinators said they hope to inspire Filipinos to unite in preserving the country’s maritime and territorial integrity.
What they did was exceptional. Through the leadership of Filipino youth in defending the nation is an example of heroism and a symbolic act of defiance. Their voyage showed China that what they are claiming is not theirs. The recent protests led by “Kalayaan, Atin Ito” Movement was a massive act that gave great impact to strike China in preventing them from behaving like an arrogant hegemony. The group have shown no fear facing all the dangers that have crossed on their way.
Our national hero said, “The youth is our hope of our Future” – and the youth voyage proved that. For them, there is nothing more important when it comes to defending what is right. What they did bears great honor and respect for the nation. So to all Filipinos, let us be unified with one spirit and one goal. Don’t just be silent, take part and show your support in your own little way. Follow what the Filipino youth is fighting for.
