HEERENVEEN, Netherlands (Reuters) — Dmitry Koltakov won the 2017 Ice Speedway World Championship on Sunday (April 2) in the Dutch city of Heerenveen despite crashing out at the final corner of the final round.
The Russian led the final round from the start carrying a very comfortable lead in the overall standings and looked set to finish the championship with yet another win.
But Koltakov, tailed by Dmitry Khomitsevic, crashed out in the final corner and slid straight into the collision barriers.
Koltakov managed to get up for a celebratory lap before he was awarded his winner’s medal.
