Kramatorsk rocket attacks damage military headquarters, kill civilians

Rockets crashed into Kramatorsk on Tuesday (February 10), some 50 km (30 miles) north of the front, hitting the main headquarters of the Ukrainian military campaign in the east as well as nearby residential areas.

Local officials said at least seven civilians were killed, and dozens of civilians and soldiers wounded. A parliamentary deputy said four soldiers were also killed.

Fires burned at an aerodrome at Ukraine’s military headquarters, where video provided by the Ukrainian Defence Ministry showed the imprint of a rocket strike visible on the ground and emergency service workers lifting a dead body into an ambulance.

Ten Ukrainian servicemen were also wounded in the attacks.

In a residential area of Kramatorsk, remnants of rockets stuck out of the ground and houses and cars bore shattered windows from the attacks.

A woman’s body lay on the snow, covered by a blanket, in a small city square.

Her husband arrived to identify her and cried as he crouched over her body.

Advances by pro-Russian rebels diminished hopes of a deal when Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany hold a summit in Minsk on Wednesday under a new Franco-German initiative to halt fighting in a war that has killed more than 5,000 people.
