Lawmaker says House should probe encounter between PHL navy and Vietnamese fishermen

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) — Magdalo Party-List Representative Gary Alejano is asking the House of Representatives to conduct an investigation into the encounter between the Philippine Navy and Vietnamese fishermen in the West Philippine Sea.

The encounter resulted in the death of two Vietnamese fishermen, while five others  were apprehended for illegal fishing in the area near western Pangasinan.

Alejano said that the government should formulate a concrete strategy on how to handle issues in the West Philippine Sea.

Meanwhile, Malacañang yesterday, said an investigation into the incident has been initiated.

“Authorities are now conducting a fair and thorough investigation into the incident involving a Philippine Navy vessel and Vietnamese fishing boats which were seen fishing 34 nautical miles off Cape Bolinao in Pangasinan well within exclusive economic zone,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.
