(Eagle News)—Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Sunday, Aug. 26, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of US Senator John McCain, a “true friend of the Philippines and the Filipino people.”
“As Chair of the Armed Services Committee of the United States Senate, Senator McCain was among those who valued not just the shared history between our two countries but also the importance of our strategic partnership,” he said.
Lorenzana noted that McCain “never forgot the sacrifice of Filipinos who fought under the American flag during the Second World War.”
Together with Senator Daniel Inouye and Senator Daniel Akaka, Lorenzana said the senator “played an important role in securing US Government recognition for our aging veterans.”
McCain succumbed to brain cancer on August 25 in the afternoon (Sunday morning, August 26, PHL time).
His death came days after his camp announced he had decided to stop treatment for brain cancer.
