LP solons claim they might leave “super majority” after vote on death penalty bill

QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News)  — Several members of the Liberal Party are ready to leave the “super majority” bloc in the House of Representatives allegedly because of the vote on the revival of the death penalty.

Based on the Liberal Party caucus, the party deferred its decision to bolt from the “super majority” only after the voting on death penalty.

“Ang Liberal Party, ganun ang aming proseso. We have to discuss, we have to debate, we have to hear. In fact, dito tatlong oras ang pagpupulong dahil nga pinoproseso ng maayos,” the LP president, Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan in a televised interview said.

“We have to manage the decision making process from the death penalty and then the matter of leaving the supermajority,” Pangilinan added.
Meanwhile, Albay Congressman Edcel Lagman has challenged House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez to push through with his threat to remove from the “super majority” as well as from their House Committee chairmanships those members of the House of Representatives who will vote against the revival of the death penalty.

It can be remembered that Alvarez threatened to replace lawmakers who will oppose the House’s death penalty bill from their committee chairmanships.

He added there would be no exceptions, and that even former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo can be removed from her position as the Deputy Speaker if she would not vote for capital punishment.

“We will replace the deputy speaker if she who won’t support the administration bill, because it’s awkward if you’re a deputy speaker and you don’t agree with the leadership,” Alvarez said.
