Magnitude 5.5 quake shakes Surigao del Norte followed by strong aftershocks

(Eagle News) – A magnitude 5.5 quake rocked Surigao del Norte Friday afternoon, April 26, which was preceded and followed by several tremors of lower magnitude.

The tremors have been felt in the province for the past several days, according to the data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), but the strongest quake so far was recorded at 1:26 p.m. on Friday, April 26, with a magnitude of 5.5.

Several aftershocks followed with the strongest so far recoded at magnitude 5.0 at 2:04 p.m, and the other aftershocks strong enough to be felt with recorded magnitudes of 4.2 and 4.4.

The 5.5 magnitude quake was located 70 kilometers southeast of General Luna, Surigao del Norte.

It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of only 11 kilometers.

The tremor was felt at intensity 2 in Surigao City and in Gingoog City.

Phivolcs said more aftershocks are expected in the area.

-Moderately strong quakes also hit Leyte, Ilocos Norte-

Earlier, this morning, at 10:44 a.m., a magnitude 4.0 quake also shook Leyte, seven kilometers northeast of Albuera.

A magnitude 4.4 quake also rattled Ilocos Norte, seven kilometers southwest of South Nicolas at 3 a.m. Friday. It was a fairly shallow quake with a depth of 10 kilometers.
