Magnitude-5 quake shakes Surigao del Norte

(Eagle News) — A magnitude-5 quake shook Surigao del Norte early on Sunday, just two weeks after the province was struck by a destructive 6.7-magnitude quake that killed eight people.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said this latest quake to hit Surigao was of tectonic origin, with a depth of 33 kilometers. It was traced 123 km northeast of Burgos, Surigao Del Norte at 2:57 a.m., on Sunday, February 26.

A magnitude-4 aftershock was also recorded 106 km northeast of Burgos town at 5:27 a.m. It had a depth of 13 km.

Early this month, on February 10, a 6.7-magnitude quake was recorded off the coast of Surigao del Norte, which damaged at least 300 houses, caused the collapse of seven bridges, and caused power outage in at least 11 towns.

The cost of damage to infrastructure and property reached P665 million in the previous 6.7-magnitude quake.
