(Eagle News) — The Makabayan Coalition on Thursday, March 14, endorsed the bids of two other senatorial candidates, bringing the number of their endorsed bets to 11.

Neri Colmenares, who is included in Makabayan’s senatorial slate, said in a Tweet that labor leaders Sonny Matula, president of the Federation of Free Workers, and Leody De Guzman, chair of the Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino, have been added to their list.

Apart from Colmenares’ bid, Makabayan earlier endorsed the senatorial candidacies of Nancy Binay, Chel Diokno, Samira Gutoc, Bam Aquino, Serge Osmeña, Florin Hilbay, Grace Poe, and Erin Tañada.

In a previous statement, Makabayan said it would push for the suspension or repeal of the excise tax provision in the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law, the promotion of human rights and due process, the fight for the country’s sovereignty, and the resumption of peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, among others, stressing the need for an “independent Senate” as “impunity reigns and the system of checks and balances among the executive, judiciary and legislative branches of government is in peril.”

“The upcoming elections gives us the opportunity to elect to the Senate men and women of proven competence and integrity who can assert the Senate’s independence and push for laws that favor our people. Candidates who have a proven track record of public service and a fighting chance to win,” Makabayan had said.
