Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry summons PHL envoy over Binay remarks

MALAYSIAN Foreign Minister Wisma Putra has summoned Philippine embassy’s charge d’ affaires, Maria Antonina Mendoza-Oblena over published remarks by Vice President Jejomar Binay that he would pursue the country’s territorial claim to Sabah.

The government of Malaysia reiterated its position that Malaysia does not recognize and will not entertain any claims by any party on Sabah.

The ministry also stressed that Sabah was recognized by the United Nations (UN) and international community as part of Malaysia since the formation of the federation on September 16, 1963.

VP Binay vowed to pursue the Philippines’s claim on Sabah while campaigning in Quezon province.

Binay is the standard bearer of the united nationalist alliance, the same party for whom self-styled Sulu Princess Jacel Kiram is a senatorial candidate.

Jacel’s father, who claimed to be the sultan of the defunct sultanate of Sulu, was the man who launched the 2013 attack on eastern Sabah which became known as the Lahad Datu Incursion.
