Manila Water to implement “one-time bill waiver” for customers severely affected by water shortage

10 cubic meters of water consumed by Manila Water customers will not be billed

(Eagle News)—-Manila Water is slated to implement a “one-time bill waiver” for selected customers to compensate for the water shortage that gripped several areas in Metro Manila and Rizal.

According to Manila Water president Ferdinand Dela Cruz, customers in barangays which experienced no water service for at least seven days—whether continuous or broken—within the period of March 6 to 31 will not be charged in their March bills.

He said the list of areas covered by the waiver will be released by the end of this month.

The list, he said, has to be approved by the company’s board of directors and will include only those seriously affected by the water shortage.

He added 10 cubic meters consumed by its customers–whether domestic, semi-domestic or lifeline—will not be billed.

The waiver is apart from the penalty the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System is slated to impose against the water concessionaire, whose customers  have been experiencing zero to little water services since several weeks ago.

Manila Water has attributed the problem to the declining water levels in La Mesa dam.

An irate President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to cancel the contracts of the country’s water concessionaires and to fire MWSS officials who he said failed to do their jobs.

He gave them until April 7 to submit a report on what they have done to address the water shortage, after which he said he would decide whether to push through with his threats.
