AUGUST 18 (Eagle News) — Severe EL Niño is expected to hit Metro Manila and 29 provinces in the country starting next month.
According to the country’s weather bureau, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the increasing temperature in the eastern Pacific Ocean could bring drought to the country.
Because of this, dams in the country will be affected, including those in Mindanao where hydro power plants would also be severely hit.
The Department of Energy (DOE) is also on full alert for the effects of El Niño to the whole country.
According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) climate prediction center and the international research institute for climate and society, there is a greater than 90% chance that El niño will continue through northern hemisphere winter 2015-16, and around an 85% chance it will last into early spring 2016.
