Mexican leader arrives in Manila for APEC meeting and state visit

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto arrived at Manila’s international airport on Tuesday (November 17) for a state visit to the country.

Pena Nieto was greeted by an entourage of Filipino officials and walked past two rows of honour guards upon his arrival.

He will also be attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Meeting which starts on Wednesday (November 18).

Pena Nieto is scheduled to meet Philippines President Benigno Aquino later on Tuesday.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) gathering on Wednesday and Thursday (November 19) comes on the heels of a G20 summit in Turkey, which was dominated by discussions about the violence emanating from Syria’s 4-1/2-year-old civil war.

The Philippines was on high alert as the leaders arrived. Police in the city of 12 million closed off many roads leading to the venues of the meeting, which will be attended by about 20 heads of state or government, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
