VANCOUVER, CANADA (Eagle News) — With the 2017 MLS Regular Season ending soon, Canadian powerhouses Toronto FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue to hold on to the No. 1 seeds in both the Eastern and Western Conference respectively, both teams having clinched berths and officially punching their ticket into the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Toronto FC clinched the 2017 Supporters’ Shield, an annual award given to the Major League Soccer team with the best regular season record, determined by the MLS point system.
This was the first ever in franchise history and the first for a Canadian MLS club to win the award.
Vancouver Whitecaps FC became the first team in the Western Conference to clinch a playoff berth following a road win over Sporting KC in Week 30.
Unable to extend their lead in the West, Whitecaps FC fell short to New York Red Bulls 3-0 who were in desperate need of a win.
Entering the match with a four-point lead in the Western Conference meant a victory would secure a Knockout Round bye.
However, the Red Bulls were able to come out with the victory over the heavily favored Whitecaps FC in Week 31 and earning their first MLS win since Aug. 12.
Fellow Canadian club, Montreal Impact’s playoff chase officially ended following a heartbreaking 2-1 loss at Colorado and officially after New York Red Bulls win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC, who clinched the 6th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
This marks the Impact’s first time missing the Post Season since 2014 after just reaching the Conference Final the previous season.
