(Eagle News)— The Department of Transporation (DOTr) through the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) has served and ferried a total of 24, 117 public and private workers for free in celebration of Labor Day on May 1.

The public service was done to pay tribute to the productive contributions of the Filipino workers to the nation’s progress.

Free rides were availed by 11,409 workers from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 12, 708 workers from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said workers were issued with magnetic cards upon the presentation of their company IDs to “gain entry at the MRT service gates.”
“Upon arrival at their respective destinations, workers who availed the free ride dropped their issued magnetic ticket at the drop box at the MRT service gate,” Bello said.

This is to ensure the accurate number of workers who participated in the free service.

MRT-3 stations are located on North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, Kamuning, Cubao and Santolan-Annapolis, all in Quezon City; Ortigas Avenue in Pasig City; Shaw Blvd. and Boni Avenue in Mandaluyong City; Guadalupe, Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue (Buendia), Ayala Avenue and Magallanes Avenue in Makati City; and Taft Avenue in Pasay City.

Aside from the MRT-3, the Philippine National Railway (PNR) and the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) also offered free rides to all the Filipino workers from the private and public sectors.

PNR covered the trips from Alabang to Tutuban, starting 6:07 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
