The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has promised to deliver better service to commuters riding the Metro Rail Transit at Light Rail Transit trains, with the increase of the MRT and LRT fare.
On Jan. 4, 2015, the new fare for MRT and LRT will take effect with a base fare of P11 plus P1 per succeeding kilometer.
The present fare for MRT 3 range from P10 to P15, while those for Line 1 range from P12 to P20, and for Line 2 from P12 to P15.
According to DOTC spokesperson Michael Arthur Sagcal, they have begun changing of the rails in LRT. The new LRT trains or coaches are also expected to arrive in September 2015.
Once the fare increase has been put in place, there will be more improvement in the LRT and MRT trains, he said, such as fixing the signaling system and overhauling of trains, Sagcal said.
While he acknowledged that commuters’ budget will be affected with the MRT and LRT fare hike, he explained that this is necessary for them to push through with the train impovement.
