LOS ANGELES, United States (AFP) — The Golden State Warriors still don’t know if they’ll have head coach Steve Kerr back for the NBA Finals as he continues to contend with complications from back surgery.
“Right now he’s doing everything but coaching, but right now he’s not able to coach,” general manager Bob Myers said Thursday.
“I wish could say he was, and I’m sure he wishes he could, as well, but that’s where we are right now.”
Kerr himself told ESPN website The Undefeated on Monday — after the Warriors completed a four-game sweep of the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference finals — that his status was “just day-by-day.”
Kerr, in his third year as Warriors coach, has missed his team’s last 10 playoff games as he deals with debilitating symptoms stemming from a loss of spinal fluid during back surgery two years ago.
The 51-year-old traveled with the team for the final two games of the Western Conference finals series in San Antonio for the first time since he took an indefinite leave on April 23.
But sources told ESPN that Kerr continues to be in “a significant amount of pain and discomfort.”
Golden State, trying to regain the NBA title they won in 2015 but surrendered to the Cleveland Cavaliers last year, await the winner of the Eastern Conference finals between the Boston Celtics and Cavaliers.
