Over 8,000 families have been evacuated, following Mt. Mayon’s phreatic eruption, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said on Wednesday.
According to the NDRRMC, the 8,296 families–or over 34,000 individuals—have been brought to 30 evacuation centers in Albay.
The evacuees are from barangays in Camalig, Ginobatan, Ligao, Daraga, Tabaco, Malilipot, Sto. Domingo Legaspi.
The NDRRCMC said some of those evacuated were outside the 7-kilometer extended danger zone, but lived in waterways where lahar could flow.
“Sinisiguro lang ang kaligtasan nila..Bugso na rin ng pag-ulan sa Bicol Region kaya sila inevacuate,” NDRRMC spokesperson Romina Marasigan said.
Over P5 million—P5,536, 605–worth of food and non-food items have already been distributed to the evacuees, the NDRRMC said.
Meanwhile, classes at all levels remain suspended in Ginobatan, Camalig, Tobaco, Ligao and Daraga.
