ILOILO CITY, Aug. 19 (PIA 6) — The National Food Authority (NFA) reiterated its call to the public in Western Visayas to be continuously vigilant of the rice they are buying and cooking.
This is despite the findings that the so-called “fake rice” found in Davao City and other areas are isolated cases of chemically contaminated sample which may have been results of mishandling and improper storage.
The NFA issued an advisory to the public which included tips to avoid food contamination.
The advisory said that it is important to maintain cleanliness by always washing hands before and after handling food and keeping kitchen surfaces such as appliances, countertops, cutting boards and utensils clean.
The NFA said that food handlers should cook food thoroughly to its proper temperature depending on its type. Likewise, the public is reminded to just cook enough for consumption.
It is also advised that food are separated and stored properly by immediately placing raw food immediately in the refrigerator or freezer after washing.
When storing food in the fridge, it is important to use a clean and covered container and to separate raw food from cooked food at all times to prevent cross contamination.
The public is advised to avoid using plastic for hot food and only use microwave-safe containers, lids, and wraps when reheating food in a microwave oven.
The NFA also said that it is not recommended to immediately store hot or newly-cooked food but let it first sit at room temperature. Also, leftovers should not be kept for more than four days in the refrigerator.
