No fees to be collected in UP this semester

(Eagle News) — No tuition fees nor other school fees will be collected in University of the Philippines campuses this semester.

This is according to UP President Danilo Concepcion, who made the announcement in a memorandum dated Aug. 7.

The announcement also came days after President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, which provides  for free education in state universities and colleges, local universities and colleges, and state technical-vocational schools.

The new law, however, will only take effect next year.

“All Filipino undergraduate students are qualified, except those who already hold an undergraduate or bachelor’s degree, those who fail to meet admission and retention rules, and those who exceed the maximum residency requirement prescribed by the university,” a UP statement said.

It added students of medicine and law were not covered by the provisions of the memo.
