CHICAGO – Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams went to the Philippines for the first time in his life this summer and said it was a life-changing experience.
Adams visited SM Mall of Asia Music Hll representing NBA 3X 2017, along with NBA Cares obligations. Outside of his NBA duties, Adams said he spent a long time driving through different parts of the Philippines and noticed the country’s love for basketball.
Here is a Q&A with Adams held in Chicago before the Thunder topped the Bulls, 101-69 on Oct. 28 at the United Center.
What was it like visiting the Philippines this summer?
SA: “My experience in the Philippines, it was sick, mate. The food was awesome. The people were great. Lechon is still my stuff.”
What did you learn while you were over there?
SA: “Going to a place that loves basketball as much as they do, it gives you more appreciation for the sport.”
How do you know they love basketball?
SA: “I’ve never seen that ever in my life. Where you go into the really poor areas of the country and kids are still playing with no shoes on or proper clothes … playing on a hoop or without a backboard or not even a real hoop. It’s something very inspirational to see.”
What were the people like?
SA “They’re nut cases, mate. They absolutely love basketball and will accept anything to do with basketball. It’s awesome.”
Would you ever go back to the Philippines?
SA: “I’d love to go back. The food is too good.”
Why has OKC been so disruptive this year?
SA: “It came down to pressure on the ball really and not allowing our teams get to the middle. We’ve forced them to the baseline, forced them to help and from there, it’s just the backside’s responsibility to rotate well.”
What has it been like playing with Carmelo Anthony and Paul George?
SA: “They’re both crazy clutch players. They both have the ability to score in a variety of ways, but at the same time they’re different players. You add Russ on top of that? We’re a scary group.”
