One dead after small plane crashes into rail tracks near San Francisco

The pilot of a small plane was killed on Sunday (June 19) after his aircraft crashed onto Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) commuter rail tracks in Hayward southeast of San Francisco.

Local media said the pilot was the only person on board when it crashed shortly before noon local time.

The plane was described as a Piper PA23 single engine aircraft and local media said fire crews were able to quickly contain the blaze at the crash site.

BART said services were temporarily stopped at two area stations and that passengers were provided with bus service to complete their rides.

Both of the affected stations were reopened within less than three hours of the crash, BART said.
