The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) north Luzon bureau has called on residents to be on guard against ‘smaze’ from Indonesia which has reached southern Philippines.
Engr. Leo Bunyag, weather bureau assistant chief, said the ‘smaze’ (smoke and haze), was a product of a fire which originated in that Southeast Asian nation a few weeks ago.
“We are on alert of the extent of the ‘smaze’ in other parts of the country after it reached Palawan. Residents should stay calm but should always be on guard and to take appropriate actions in case the ‘smaze’ reaches them,” Bunyag said.
He said the haze was enhanced by typhoon Lando and on its way to parts of Luzon.
However, he explained that if the ‘smaze’ will reach large portion of Luzon, it will not be as thick as that in Mindanao and Vizayas regions.
Latest report claims there were already two deaths in southern Philippines caused by the ‘smaze’.
He added that ‘smaze’ is dangerous to health and may cause deaths or other health complications if exposed to it. (ALM/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
