(Eagle News) — Malacanang on Thursday condoled with the families of the two soldiers who were killed in Wednesday’s friendly fire incident, the second in Marawi after President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law in Mindanao to quell the rebellion there.

“On behalf of the President, we wish to express our deepest condolences to the families of the two soldiers who were killed in yesterday’s air strike accident while fighting Maute rebel remnants,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.

He said the government was deeply saddened by the incident, and “will remember” the “heroism” of the “fallen men in uniform (who) laid down their lives for duty, flag and country.”

“(The government)…will provide the necessary assistance to their bereaved families,” he added, also noting that an investigation was underway.
