Palace dismisses speculations gov’t had hand in Halili killing; They are “unfounded,” Roque says

(Eagle News) — Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque dismissed as “unfounded” speculations the government had a hand in the killing of Tanauan, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili.

In a press conference, Roque noted the three angles the police were looking into in the mayor’s killing: politics, his shame campaign and his alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade.

“Apparently iba’t ibang aspeto ngayon ang lumalabas sa pag-imbestiga,” Roque said.

On Thursday, July 5, Senator Panfilo Lacson said based on his conversation with Halili’s kin, they suspect the government was behind the Tanauan mayor’s killing.

He said this after they supposedly discovered a surveillance was being conducted on them with the use of “manufactured plates.”

Lacson, a former Philippine National Police chief, said the police made use of such plates in the conduct of operations against suspects.

The senator, however, said he told the family to refrain from judging and to wait for results of the probe.
