(Eagle News) — The Palace on Thursday said it will not meddle in attempts to unseat Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno via quo warranto proceedings.
“It’s novel, but I don’t see how the Executive can be involved in this other than if the quo warranto succeeds and the court orders that she should be removed, I can assure you, the Executive will implement it because we’re the chief implementor of the law,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press conference.
According to Roque, it would defer to the Office of the Solicitor General if it decides to initiate the proceedings against Sereno and heed Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez’s call.
In calling for the proceedings that aim to question whether a person has a legal right to hold office, Alvarez said Sereno had failed to submit her complete Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth requirements, and failed her psychiatric test.
But in her defense, Sereno’s camp said the proceeding against her had no basis.
They said the chief justice may only be removed from office via impeachment.
