(Eagle News)–The Palace has confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte has sacked Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office general manager Alexander Balutan due to “serious allegations of corruption.”
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo statement was different from that of PCSO Deputy Spokesperson Florante Solmerin who had said Balutan resigned due to “personal reasons.”
Panelo did not elaborate about the allegations.
In his statement, Panelo instead reiterated that “governance and public accountability are the twin hallmarks of the Duterte administration.”
“These are the standards that those in the government must exercise at all times and with utmost responsibility and fidelity. Those who fail to observe the same will inexorably suffer the harsh and punitive consequences,” he said.
Panelo said the government hopes what happened to Balutan “will serve as a stern warning to all government officials and employees that there are no sacred cows in the current administration, especially when it comes to serving the Filipino people with integrity and loyalty.”
He said “the campaign against corruption like the war on prohibited drugs will be relentless and continuing until the last day of the President’s term.”
“‘Not during my watch!’ is the searing message of PRRD to those who wish to violate the Constitution and the laws of the land,” he said.
Balutan had already come under fire for spending P6.4 million for a year-end party of PCSO employees.
He, however, maintained the party was a “morale-booster” for PCSO employees who had met their targets.
Duterte then backed Balutan, saying that if the people were fed, “then OK.”
