Palace: President Duterte “generally satisfied” with Aguirre’s performance despite “certain” DOJ “debacles”

(Eagle News) — The Palace on Wednesday said President Rodrigo Duterte was “generally satisfied” with the performance of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre.

Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra said this was despite “certain” Department of Justice “debacles.”

“(The President) did not hide his displeasure about certain developments pertaining to the war on drugs, the dismissal of charges against high-profile suspects,” Guevarra said in reference to the charges filed against Kerwin Espinosa, Peter Lim, Peter Co, and others.

Asked if he was aware of any Cabinet revamp, Guevarra said he was “not aware” of any.

He said the Office of the President has not received resignation letters either from Aguirre or from Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, as some reports speculated.

In fact, he said both Bello and Aguirre would be attending the Cabinet meeting today.

Guevarra issued the clarificatory statements  following reports of rumors circulating that Aguirre would be sacked by the President, and had therefore decided to submit his resignation letter himself.

There were also reports of rumors about Bello submitting his own resignation letter, after the  President expressed outrage over the death of Overseas Filipino Worker Joanna Demafelis in Kuwait, and amid rumors the chief executive was  not pleased with how the Department of Labor and Employment was handling the end of contractualization issue.
