Palace: President Duterte to sign bill seeking to establish national ID system into law

(Eagle News)—President Rodrigo Duterte will sign into law a proposed national ID system.

This is according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, who held a press conference on Friday, May 25.

“This landmark bill is part of the legislative priority agenda of the Duterte administration to improve the delivery of government services; thus, once ratified, the President will sign this into law,”  Roque said.

The bicameral conference committee has approved a measure seeking for the same.

According to Senator Panfilo Lacson, the reconciled version is closer to the version of the Senate, which seeks to consolidate multiple government IDs and establish a  national identification system to be called the Philippine Identification System or PhilSys.

The measure has to be ratified by both chambers of Congress, and then transmitted to President Duterte for signing.

Progressive lawmakers have slammed the bicameral approval, saying, among others, that such a law would enable an encroachment into the privacy of Filipinos.
