Peruvian authorities capped off their sixth major drug burn of the year with the elimination of a haul of 2 tonnes (2.2 tons) mostly of cocaine Wednesday (October 14).
The latest incineration included the 2 tonnes (2.2 tons) of drugs seized since September 11, according to media reports. The event took place with a public burning.
Jorge Flores Goicochea, a vice minister at Peru’s Interior Ministry, announced the contents of the drug after testing.
“Today, we are burning two tonnes (2.2 tons), and 200 kilograms (485 pounds) essentially of cocaine clorohydrate, cocaine paste and marijuana, making the annual total 20 tonnes (22 tons) already burned in what has been the sixth anti-drug operation.”
Peru’s efforts to eradicate drugs comes amid a renewed focus; according to the U.N. and the U.S. government, Peru is currently the world’s top cocaine producer. (Reuters)
