DFA – The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-National Capital Region (PCCI-NCR), headed by Philippines-Myanmar Business Council Chairman Ruy Moreno, and PCCI-NCR Vice-President and Agriman Enterprises President Danilo Sanchez, undertook an exploratory mission to Myanmar from February 22 to 25.
The seven-member business delegation met Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex G. Chua on February 23. Mr. Sanchez said the exploratory mission in Myanmar aims to look for possible business opportunities for Philippine Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Ambassador Chua noted the increase in business missions from the Philippines since last year. He expressed hope that these business missions would lead to closer relations between Philippine and Myanmar businesses. The entry in 2014 of Ayala Land, Manila Water Inc. and ComWorks Inc. bodes well for Philippines-Myanmar economic relations, he added.
During the meeting, Mr. Norberto R. Ong, Senior Consultant of Waterstone Myanmar Consulting Services Co., Ltd., gave an overview of the developments in Myanmar’s economy. Mr. Ong said agriculture, tourism and education are promising sectors for Philippine businesses.
PCCI-NCR also conducted industry visits and market scanning, and met with the members of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industries (UMFCCI) for a one-on-one business matching.
During the State Visit of President U Thein Sein to the Philippines on 05 December 2013, PCCI and UMFCCI signed a Memorandum of Agreement which provides for exchange of information and business missions.
