(Eagle News) — Six volcanic earthquakes and two rockfall events were recorded at Mayon Volcano in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
According to PHIVOLCS, two of these earthquakes were related to “phreatic eruption events” that occurred at 8:11 a.m. on Thursday, March 7, and at 6:27 a.m. today.
“These phreatic events generated 500- and 300-meter high grayish ash plume from the summit before drifting southwest, respectively,” PHIVOLCS said.
PHIVOLCS said the volcano was so far at an Alert Level 2, which means it is in a “moderate level of unrest.”
In line with this, PHIVOLCS recommended a ban on the entry of people into the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone and a “precautionary seven-kilometer radius extended danger zone or EDZ in the south-southwest to east -northeast sector, stretching from Anoling, Camalig to Sta. Misericordia, Sto. Domingo..”
“People residing close to these danger areas are also advised to observe precautions associated with rockfalls, (pyroclastic density currents), and ashfall,” PHIVOLCS said.
