PHIVOLCS lowers Mayon volcano alert status

(Eagle News)—The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has lowered the alert status of Mayon volcano, following what it said was a “general decline in unrest.”

In its 8 a.m. bulletin, PHIVOLCS said  the alert status was now at 2 instead of 3, considering that seismic activity has “waned,” and no new lava has been detected on the volcano’s summit crater.

PHIVOLCS said Mayon’s summit glow  has also diminished “from intense to faint,” and gravity-driven lava has stabilized, among others.

“The lowering of the status level should not be interpreted to mean that the volcano’s unrest has ceased,”  though, PHIVOLCS said.
