PHIVOLCS places Misamis Oriental town on ‘watch list’

MISAMIS Oriental (Eagle News) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) have placed a coastal town in Misamis Oriental in the “watch list” at the onset of the rainy season.

Fernando Vincent Dy, Jr. Said that PHIVOLCS has issued an “alert” last week on some villages in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, at the height of heavy rains after PHIVOLCS noted a “ground movement” in the area.

He said that the PHIVOLCS has reported “ground movements” in the village of Madrid in Villanueva prompting the “alert,” which was lowered to the normal level at the end of the day.

An “alert” level is to warn residents in the area to prepare for possible evacuation once the ground movement intensifies.

He said PHIVOLCS has installed “sensors” in some outskirt villages of Villanueva, two years ago, when sink holes suddenly appeared in the villages of Madrid and Looc affecting 50 houses.

In 2014, “sink holes” were also reported to have affected about 10 villages in gingoog city, a component city of Misamis Oriental, about 128 kilometers east of Cagayan De Oro City.

Sinkholes occur when a surface ground collapsed and sinks into the soil cavities of lime stones that crack as acidic water passes through due to heavy rains.
