On Sunday evening, (December 21, Monday) Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was crowned as the 64th Miss Universe during the coronation night of the Miss Universe 2015 held at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 2015 Miss Universe pageant was hosted by Emmy Award-winning TV personality Roselyn Sanchez and comedian Steve Harvey.
Before Pia was hailed as the 2015 Miss Universe, beauty queen, host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez-Arévalo was the new Miss Universe and Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Pia Wurtzbach was the first runner-up.
Steve Harvey went back on stage and apologized for his mistake.
After the announcement of winners, the show organizers flashed the card containing the actual results of the Miss Universe 2015 pageant.
During the pageant, when she was asked, “Why would you be the next Miss Universe?”, Pia said and here we quote:
“To be a Miss Universe is both an honor and a responsibility, I will use my voice to influence the youth and I will raise awareness to certain issues and causes like HIV awareness that’s timely and relevant to my country which is the Philippines. I want to show the world, the universe rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart.”
Her answer cheers the live audience and even those who are watching online.
After 42 years, this is the third time that the Philippines won the prestigious beauty title. The first Filipina who won the title of Miss Universe is Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran also won the beauty title in 1973. (Eagle New Service)
