(Eagle News) — The Senate would likely vote whether to push through with the impeachment proceedings against Supreme Court Chief justice on-leave Maria Lourdes Sereno, in the event that the Supreme Court decides to remove her from office in the quo warranto case.
Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Wednesday, April 25, said he will consult the senators on this question – if they would still proceed with the impeachment trial in case of a Supreme Court decision removing Sereno from office.
It is expected that the Senate will tackle the impeachment complaint once the House of Representatives forwards the articles of impeachment against Sereno to them after the summer break.
“Now (in the scenario) that we are already involved in the proceeding, ang tanong dyan if Senate will recognize the removal of the Chief Justice through the quo warranto,” Pimentel said during the weekly Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum.
“If majority says na ok it’s a valid removal, then we won’t proceed, but if majority says invalid and there’s someone to remove therefore tuloy natin ang impeachment,” he explained.
The senator said he will talk to the other members and conduct a caucus to decide on the matter.
“Magvo-vote dapat kami, I will have to consult, mag-caucus po kami,” the Senate President said.
