(Eagle News) — The world-famous Guimaras mango will be exported to Russia soon.
Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol made the announcement in a Facebook post he shared on Thursday, May 2.
According to Piñol, this was after Exim Pacific, a Russian fruit-importing company, expressed interest in buying two metric tons of the mango weekly.
He said Agriculture Region Executive Director Remelyn Recoter is now working on the export requirements for the product, and is “coordinating closely with the Bureau of Plant Industry for the sanitary and phyto-sanitary documents.”
He said the DA, through the Agricultural Credit Policy Council, earmarked P1 million as working capital for the cooperative which will consolidate the farmers’ produce.
The agency, he said, has “also committed to address(ing) the other issues confronting the production of Guimaras mango.”
According to Piñol, the mangoes will also be featured in an eight-day expo at the DA Central Compound in Quezon City starting today, May 2.
“An estimated 5 to 10 metric tons will be put on sale during the expo by Guimaras mango farmers themselves who will be assisted by the DA Agriculture and Marketing Assistance Service and DA Regional Field Office Western Visayas,” he said.
He said after the expo, the DA will feature other mangoes from other provinces, “especially” Zambales.
“Guimaras mangoes on sale during the expo will be placed in ready to pick up fruit boxes with 2 to 5 kilos per box,” he said.
