MAY 18 (Reuters) — Pitch Perfect 2″ topped the box office charts this weekend, with a whopping $70.3 million debut despite fierce competition from “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Universal’s sequel earned more in its first weekend than the original “Pitch Perfect” which pulled in only $65 million during its entire North American theatrical run.
Warner Brothers’ “Mad Max: Fury Road” came in second place, with $44.4 million in earnings across 3,702 locations.
The two hit sequels’ pushed “Avengers: Age of Ultron” from its top spot on the box office charts to settle for third place and a $38.8 million finish. Its domestic total stands at $372 million.
“Hot Pursuit” landed in fourth place with $5.8 million in earning, for a total of $23.5 million in the past two weeks it has been in theaters.
A24’s “Ex Machina” rounded out the top five box office hits, earning $2.1 million, and pushing its gross to $19.6 million.
