(Eagle News)– Daanbantayan, Cebu Mayor Vicente Loot had to be rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, May 30, after a gun that he had left tucked in his pants accidentally discharged.
A police report said Loot had come from a vigil of a supporter in Barangay Lanao when the incident took place at 8:40 p.m.
The report said Loot sat on the weapon, which discharged a bullet that hit his left leg.
The incident took place after Loot and his family survived an ambush in the town’s wharf that left at least four people injured.
According to the police, the mayor; his wife, former Mayor Malou Loot; son Board Member Shun Simora; and other relatives were disembarking from a pump boat when several men fired at them.
Injured were Loot’s two drivers, a wharf porter, and a helper.
Loot, a retired police general, is facing drug-related charges.
He has been identified by President Rodrigo Duterte as a protector of illegal drug syndicates.
“How can you be effective during the time of corruption of law? He’s (Loot) a police general, he’s a millionaire, he’s enjoying, he’s swimming in his (own) filth. He has his riches there and he has a filed a statement of assets and liabilities, of one hundred million pesos. What is your business? To have this one hundred million,” Duterte had said.
