QUEZON City, Philippines (Eagle News) – Philippine National Police Chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa said on Tuesday that there was a failed attempt to assassinate him during his visit in Marawi late January.
Dela Rosa said in his speech at the 23rd National Police College anniversary in Silang, Cavite that the Maute Group tried to assassinate him.
“Big-time na pala ako kasi i-a-assassinate ako,” Dela Rosa said.
“Report sa akin ng PNP at army doon sa ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao), when I was the guest of honor and speaker doon sa commencement exercises ng Mindanao State University, na-uncover nila. May nahuli silang miyembro ng Maute group,” the PNP chief added.
Dela Rosa said that the failed assassination attempt is connected with the imminent return of the PNP’s war on drugs.
“Hindi nila na-carry-out ang kanilang misyon kasi natakot sila, kasi buong MSU community ng mga graduate ng MSU, kung saan ako pumupunta, nandoon sila. Grabe ang aking kurdon, ang aking close-in security…buong gymnasium kaya hindi sila makalapit para bumaril sa akin,” the police chief added
Dela Rosa said that he cannot think of any other reason for the assassination attempt.
He said he has no personal knowledge of those who would want to get him killed.
