(Eagle News) — Senator Grace Poe on Monday said that all those responsible for the death of Joanna Demafelis should be punished.
Poe made the statement a day after a Kuwait court sentenced to death by hanging a couple who employed the Overseas Filipino Worker before she was found in a freezer in February.
“Swift and sure justice is what (Demafelis) deserve(s),” Poe said.
She said the agreement between Kuwait and the Philippines to ensure OFW protection should be signed immediately.
Such an agreement, she said, should also be present in other countries “with OFW population.”
“We must remain vigilant in ensuring that the rights and welfare of OFWs are protected, and government is always at hand to assist them,” Poe said.
The Department of Labor and Employment has imposed a ban on the deployment of OFWs to Kuwait following the death of Demafelis.
Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the conviction of the couple believed behind her death did not mean that the ban was already lifted.
