A senator opposed the proposal to turn over control of the police to the local government units as an answer to rising criminality in the country.
According to Senator Bongbong Marcos, chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government, local government control over the police force will not solve the criminality problem and instead may add other problems because of the tendency to use such force as personal armies of mayors and governors.
He added that there is a need for an in-depth study as to the reason why members of the police are involved in criminal activities, citing low wages and poor leadership as some of the suspected reasons.
