(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte was “dismayed” Zaldy Ampatuan, a primary suspect in the 2009 killing of over 50 people in Maguindanao, was allowed by a court to attend the wedding of his daughter on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
“The panel of prosecutors and the President oppose that motion, and we’re dismayed that it was granted,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said.
He noted, however, that even if the court granted Ampatuan’s furlough bid, it would not affect the case itself.
The court allowed Ampatuan to make an appearance at the wedding from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Chief Insp. Xavier Solda, spokesperson of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, said Ampatuan has since been returned to Camp Bagong Diwa, where he is detained.
