President Duterte sacks MARINA chief for excessive travels abroad

DOTr says Amaro made 24 foreign trips in a span of 13 months

(Eagle News) — The head of the Maritime Industry Authority has been sacked.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said President Rodrigo Duterte has “decided to terminate the services” of Marcial Amaro III over the “excessive” travels he made in 13 months.

According to Roque, the Department of Transportation found that Amaro made 24 foreign trips all in all in the months from 2016 to 2017.

Of the 24, 18 were made in 2017, and six in 2016.

Three were sponsored trips, while all the others were paid for by the government.

Roque said in almost all the trips, Amaro received honoraria.

Roque said the DoTR launched an inquiry  into Amaro’s travels upon the instructions of Duterte, whose office received a complaint from the Alliance of MARINA Employees.

The complaint lodged by the employees on December 22 said that Amaro had made 11 trips abroad in 2017.

“If the (Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor) chair was terminated for seven foreign travels, 24 travels are definitely considered excessive by the President’s standards,” Roque said, referring to Terry Ridon.

He said policemen, including officials, were the next to be sacked.
