(Eagle News) — Spend to restore the environment, or I will tax you to death.
President Rodrigo Duterte had this to say to mining companies, several of which he said were responsible for the destruction of the environment.
He referred to pronouncements made by former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez, and to a documentary on the destruction of communities by mining made by ABSCBN, which he said did something right “for once.”
He said he was for responsible and sustainable mining, but that if mining companies continue to destroy the environment and deprive communities of their livelihood, he would be forced to do away with it.
He said he was willing to take them to communities badly affected by mining activities.
“Declare your correct income and pay the correct taxes,” he added.
