QUEZON CITY, Philippines (Eagle News) — Department of Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary Jonas Leones said that the suggestion of President Rodrigo Duterte to transform the Island of Boracay into a land reform area is very possible.
“It’s going to be a land reform area for the Filipinos. Lilinisin ko lang naman tapos ibalik ko sa Pilipino ang lupa nila,” the President said on Monday, April 9, in his departure speech before flying to China for the Boao Forum for Asia.
Leones cited Presidential Proclamation No. 1064 signed by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2006, declaring the island of Boracay as forestland and agricultural land.
Under the declaration, the 1,028-hectare island was classified into two parts: 400 hectares (40 percent) of Boracay were declared as forestland under “protection purposes,” while the remaining hectares were declared as agricultural land.
Last month, the President approved the six-month closure of Boracay to address the problem on the sewage system in the area.
